What goes into a water heater replacement cost

The price to replace a water heater is really two numbers added together: the unit itself and the labor to install it. A few things move both:

  • Tank vs. tankless — tankless units cost more to buy and take longer to install, but they last longer and heat water on demand.
  • Gas vs. electric — gas units and their venting typically cost more than electric to install, though operating costs differ too.
  • Size — a bigger tank, or a tankless unit sized for a larger home, costs more.
  • Installation complexity — a straight like-for-like swap is cheapest. Relocating the unit, upgrading venting or gas lines, adding an expansion tank, or bringing an old install up to code all add labor and materials.

Use this as a planning estimate, then get a firm quote from a licensed plumber who can see your setup. Prices vary quite a bit by region.
